At Dino Toys, every product recommendation is the result of a structured review process. This page explains exactly how we select, evaluate, and rank the dinosaur toys we feature across our guides.
How We Select Products to Review
We start by building a shortlist of candidates for each category. Our sources include Amazon bestseller rankings, specialist retailers (Safari Ltd, Schleich, Mattel Jurassic World, Hammond Collection, Papo, CollectA), parent communities, and paleontology-focused blogs. We prioritize products that:
- Are currently in stock and available from trusted retailers
- Have enough verified customer reviews to judge real-world performance
- Meet the safety certifications required for their target age group (ASTM F963, EN 71 for applicable categories)
- Represent a meaningful option at their price point — we reject items that are simply rebadged low-quality molds
What We Evaluate
For every product that makes the shortlist, we check the following dimensions:
- Age suitability — small-part risks, weight, sharp edges, choking hazards
- Scientific accuracy — for figures, we compare proportions and details against the latest paleontological consensus (e.g., feathered theropods, accurate Spinosaurus posture)
- Build quality — paint durability, joint articulation, plastic grade, and whether seams or sharp edges appear
- Play value — for kids’ toys, we consider how open-ended or replayable the product is
- Price-to-quality ratio — we rank within tiers (budget, mid-range, premium) rather than pretending a $10 figure competes with a $60 collectible
- Customer feedback patterns — we read negative reviews carefully to spot recurring issues (broken tails, faded paint, incorrect colors)
How We Rank
Our rankings are not based on affiliate commissions. We explicitly avoid letting payout rates influence placement. A product earns a top slot if it wins on the objective dimensions above within its price tier. When two products are close, we default to the one with the stronger long-term reputation and the better consumer protection (return policy, brand accountability).
How Often We Update
Guides are reviewed and refreshed at least annually. We re-check availability, prices, new product releases, and any reported quality regressions. When we update a guide, we add the current year to the title to signal freshness. When a product is discontinued or has developed quality problems, we remove it immediately rather than leaving a dead recommendation.
Independence and Conflicts of Interest
We purchase products at retail when possible. We do not accept free samples in exchange for positive coverage, and any sponsored content would be clearly labeled as such — we currently publish none. Amazon and retailer affiliate relationships are disclosed on our Affiliate Disclosure page.
